As the highest-rated cable drama debut of the 2013-2014 season came to a close. What began last summer as a sexy BET movie and capturing 4 million viewers, Being Mary Jane, became a much talked about series and in just eight episodes it sparked equal amounts of obsessed fans and anti-Mary Jane dialogues.
Tuesday night, Being Mary Jane creator Mara Brock Akil dropped the pen and walked off the proverbial stage with a smile… or at least that’s what I hope, as her show 2-hour season finale was ranked Top Cable TV original show with 1.6/18-49 rating, drawing 2.6 million viewers during the first hour and 3.2 million viewers during the second hour, for a total of 5.8 million viewers, Live +SD.
What does Live +SD mean? Live+SD means, the people who watch the program live, as it airs, plus the people who watch via DVR within the “same day,” or between when the show actually airs and 3am EST (midnight PST), which is the time when the numbers get sent to Nielsen for processing.
We congratulate Mara and her team for a job well done and especially Gabrielle Union who portrays a very convincing Mary Jane – although controversial, we can all relate one way or another.
With ratings such as these it goes without saying, the series, which is officially a hit for BET, is returning for a second season.
